A Texas man is accused of shooting and killing his fiancée just days after proposing to her on New Year’s Eve.
Kendrick Akins, 39, was charged with murder Saturday in the death of 33-year-old Dominic Jefferson outside of a Houston apartment, news station KHOU reported.
Police said Akins gunned down his fiancée early Saturday during a confrontation in the parking lot. He then shot at a person who tried to help Jefferson before fleeing the scene.
Jefferson’s family said they were unaware of any conflict between the couple, who had recently become engaged on New Year’s Eve.
“I just want to know why,” one relative told the outlet. “I trusted him.”
Jefferson, who leaves behind three children, ran a business to help African-American women succeed in the arts.
“Nobody deserves to die like that,” Jefferson’s sister, Charmone Onyeije, told KHOU. “I’m not going to let her die in vain, but I am going to celebrate her life as we know it.”
